Set in a prison in the nineteen seventies, the penal system is in crisis. Over- crowded and understaffed, with a riot in one wing of the prison and a plot to escape in the other.
The play Barred Freedom deals with the understanding of contentment in confinement, from the mental to the physical and both in the present and looking to a future.
Wentworth 6649 is a first timer. Dawson an old ‘young’ hand. When forced together, due to being in lockdown, the conflict of class, education and language comes to the fore. Wentworth sees bars and bricks and faced with the reality of a long sentence, is resolved on suicide as the only means to escape, until Dawson’s enlightenment reveals another.
A genderless comedy performed in tandem to show the differences, not just between, but more importantly within the sexes.
