An exclusive opportunity to experience an exciting new piece, still in development, that explores the life of one of jazz’s most singular geniuses through the eyes of his most intimate companion, the English heiress Nica de Koenigswarter. A staged reading of the play is interwoven with the iconoclastic sounds of Monk’s repertoire performed live on-stage.

“Where’s jazz going? I don’t know. Maybe it’s going to hell. You can’t make anything go anywhere. It just happens.”

Born into poverty in rural America and brought up in a cramped New York apartment, Thelonious Monk was a unique creative mind now regarded as one of the world’s most influential jazz musicians - but he was beset by fluctuating mental and physical health, and fought an intolerant America that would take little notice of him until it was almost too late.

Brought up in luxury in the English countryside, a member of the Rothschild banking dynasty by birth and a baroness by marriage, Pannonica “Nica” de Koenigswarter was an aristocrat of significant privilege. Yet after a gig in Paris in 1952, the two established a connection that was as unlikely as it was absolute.

North of the Sunset charts an impossible relationship in a volatile age, and celebrates the life and music of one of the all-time jazz legends.
