Sue and Carol are lifeguards.
Their routine is simple and their dreams seems equally so as they spend their days keeping the morning swimmers, the day trippers, and the evening strollers safe.
Day after day they sit, they wait, and they watch the world go by.
But when your job is to watch, when do you get to live?
And what are they waiting for? A sign of danger?
Maybe that’s just what they need.
Each morning a lone figure appears on the sand. The women watch, transfixed, as the he wafts his equipment, listening for the beep. If only there were a way to get him to come over. If only there were a way to get him to say something. Anything.
Treading Water is a funny, heartwarming tale that combines classic end of pier comedy with Aykbourn - style dialogue. It is currently on a small tour of the UK after playing at the 2018 Vault Festival.
“Screw it! I’m going all out and giving this one five stars. A beautifully touching piece of theatre with great humour. I predict big things for this show and I cannot wait to see it again.” The Ginger in The Theatre
"A delightful and absorbing production of a sharp and perceptive script” London Theatre 1
"Kathryn Gardner’s script is beautifully paced and observed… The writing is taut, the story is sweet and enjoyable, the banter between Carol and Sue is very funny, and the double entendres littered throughout the dialogue fit appropriately into the seaside setting.” The Play's The Thing
“I was left very impressed by writer and performer Kathryn Gardner.”
“It is freezing outside but Treading Water will warm you right up with its gentle tenderness and endearing humour and charm.” Mark Aspen Reviews
“... monologues to the audience are delivered with downbeat brilliance” West End Wilma
